Multiple vehicles burned in a large scrapyard fire Tuesday in Paterson, according to fire officials.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 110 Wait St. in the city's Bunker Hill section. Initial crews encountered heavy fire at the scrap yard, according to the Paterson Fire Department.

Deputy Fire Chief Jason Macones said multiple vehicles were burning during the fire. No injuries were reported, and fire officials initially said there was no reported extension to any structures.

Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh told News 12 the fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes. By later Tuesday afternoon, the fire was out, and cleanup was underway at the scrapyard.

A man who works across the street told News 12 he heard an explosion so loud that it blew out windows in his building.

"Kaboom. Big, big boom. What happened was there was a propane tank left in a refrigerator and the claw squeezed it, put it into the scrap pile and that was it, kaboom. Then the fire," said Jeffrey Klein, of Klein Ribbon.
