Fire officials in Suffolk County have requested the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Islip Town Hazmat team to investigate after a building on a shipyard caught fire last night.
The Islip Fire Department said it received multiple calls about a commercial building on fire at Winter Bros. Shipyard along the canal on Athasca Road south of Montauk Highway in Islip just before 7 p.m.
First responders said the fire had spread to both the first and second floors, but no one was inside at the time.
It took firefighters from the Islip, East Islip and Bay Shore departments about an hour to get the scene under control.
Two firefighters were treated for injuries and released.
The Islip Fire Department said it requested the DEC and hazmat team to look into the possibility of a potential fuel spill or chemical runoff into the canal.
Suffolk County police said that the Arson Squad was called to the scene, and the investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing.
