Fire departments across Long Island are urging residents to prepare ahead of the powerful nor’easter expected to impact the region.

The East Meadow Fire Department says residents should be ready for a worst-case scenario, including losing power and being unable to leave their homes.

East Meadow Fire District Commissioner Carey Welt recommends stocking up on canned food, keeping cash on hand and having plenty of batteries for flashlights. Residents should also have portable chargers available to keep phones and other devices powered in case of an emergency.

Officials also recommend putting together a “go bag” with essentials such as a first-aid kit, toiletries and a change of clothes in case an evacuation becomes necessary.

Welt says one of the most important safety reminders is to stay away from downed power lines. Even if a line does not appear to be directly near a home, it can energize nearby objects.

“If a power line comes down and it’s a metal fence, the entire metal fence may be electrified,” Welt said. “Even if the power line is several houses away from your house, that metal fence could be conducting electricity towards your house.”

Fire officials say the safety tips may be common sense, but having a plan and preparing ahead of the storm can help residents stay safe.
