Gun violence is down in parts of Long Island, according to new data released by New York state.

Shooting incidents in communities participating in the state’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination, or GIVE, initiative dropped 19% during the first half of 2026, compared to the same period last year.

The Suffolk County Police Department saw shootings involving a person being struck decrease year over year, dropping from 20 incidents to 15, according to the state data.

The Village of Hempstead also has no shooting incidents so far in 2026.

Community organizations say outreach efforts are playing a role in preventing violence. SNUG, a violence prevention organization that works in Hempstead, says it focuses on connecting with young people, resolving conflicts and providing support before situations escalate.

“You want to make it comfortable and safe for the young individuals that commute to and from school,” said Matthew Harris, program manager with SNUG. “You want them to come outside and have fun and restore that good feeling in the community.”

The Nassau County Police Department saw shootings involving a person being struck increase from two incidents to four during the same time period, according to the state data.
