Family, friends and the Sag Harbor school community are mourning the loss of a sixth-grade student who died during a rafting accident on a school trip in Pennsylvania.
School officials identified the student as Cesar Albarracin Guncay.
According to the district superintendent, the incident happened during an annual class trip to the Pocono Mountains.
Authorities say the accident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on the Lehigh River in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission reported that five people were riding in an inflatable raft as part of a larger guided excursion when the raft capsized.
All five occupants were thrown into the water, including the 12-year-old boy. Officials said the child did not resurface.
Search and rescue teams were dispatched and later recovered the boy’s body.
The Carbon County coroner said the family was notified early Thursday morning. An autopsy is scheduled.
In a letter to the school community, Sag Harbor Superintendent Jeff Nichols described the loss as profound.
“There are no words to adequately express the depth of this loss. Cesar was a cherished member of our school family, a child who mattered deeply to all who had the privilege of knowing him,” Nichols wrote.
Video from the scene shows an overturned raft lodged against a tree in the river.
Counseling services will be made available to students and staff. A district spokesperson said the remaining students on the trip returned home overnight.
Officials said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
