Gas prices are starting to spike again on Long Island and a local food bank says the rising prices are still making it hard for people to get help.

"The biggest struggle we see is transportation getting to Pronto," says president and CEO of Pronto of Long Island Keith Scott. "We're located in Bay Shore, and it could be hard to get to Bay Shore from Montauk or East Hampton or Elmont."

As News 12 reported in May, this has been an ongoing issue gas prices have continued to rise.

But with the recent dip in prices, there was some relief.

But now, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas on Long Island is $4.04, which is up 11 cents compared to this time last week.

"That spike in gas prices may mean not having another meal on the table or having to forgo some medication or something," says Scott.

Anjelica Torebio, of Bay Shore, says rising transportation costs are making it harder to find a way to Pronto. She often relies on relatives, Uber or taxi.

"That's one of the biggest issues transportation, she says. Pronto of Long Island says they do what they can to help those who can't get to their Bay Shore location. "We started a new program called Pronto on the Go to set up little hubs throughout Suffolk and Nassau County to make the commute a little more bearable and make it a little less, costly for people to get here," says Scott.
