A popular Long Island waterfront restaurant is reopening after being hit hard by flooding during this weekend's nor'easter.

Fabio's on the Water in Merrick took on about 3 1/2 feet of water during the storm, according to owner Fabio Giambanco. The flooding damaged kitchen equipment, electrical systems, sheetrock, tables and chairs, forcing the restaurant to close since Saturday.

Crews spent Tuesday removing damaged equipment and working to dry out floors and carpeting. Giambanco said water flowed into and out of the restaurant four separate times between Saturday and Sunday. He is also concerned that saltwater exposure could lead to additional damage in the coming days.

The owner said the flooding came as a surprise because storms with northeast winds typically push water away from the area rather than causing significant flooding.

"This storm had a northeast wind. That usually pushes the water out. Down here, we were not expecting any of that," Giambanco said. "There was no prep."

A cleanup crew was expected to work overnight to finish repairs and cleanup efforts. Giambanco said the restaurant plans to reopen Wednesday and is already preparing to host a party of 125 guests.
