A 21-year-old man was arrested after a police chase through a residential neighborhood in Freeport Monday night, according to village officials.
He's now facing several charges, including fleeing officers, unlawful fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury and reckless driving.
Village of Freeport officials say a police chase through a neighborhood resulted in a car crashing onto a front lawn on E. Seaman Avenue.
Officials say police were surveilling a specific person who was on foot and were unable to locate them. It's unknown what this person was being surveilled for and if this person has been located.
Police saw a car circling the area multiple times and were concerned.
"They were concerned if this vehicle may have been there to pick up this individual," says Village of Freeport Mayor Robert T. Kennedy. "When they went to stop the vehicle, he took off."
Police then tried to pull the car over and ended up chasing the car for less than a mile. Officials say the driver of that car is 21 years old.
Officials say that car hit another vehicle and then smashed into the front yard of 186 E. Seaman Ave., causing serious damage.
"A lot of mess, you can see it," the homeowner said. "My fence [was] taken out."
Surveillance video given to News 12 shows the driver get out and run as officers pursue down Rutland Road and search the area.
Officials say marijuana was found in the vehicle that crashed into the front lawn.
"Both individuals that were in the cars were taken to the hospital and several pounds of marijuana was seized out of the vehicle," says Kennedy.
The other car involved, a white car, sustained significant head-on damage. It was towed shortly after 5 a.m.
Overnight, Freeport police had E. Seaman Avenue between Rutland Road and N. Columbus Avenue closed for the investigation.
Early this morning, the car that went through the fence at 186 E. Seaman Ave. had been removed.
