Newark Mayor Ras Baraka is speaking out days after
his arrest at the now-operational Delaney Hall immigration detention center. Video shows Baraka handcuffed and being escorted by federal agents on Friday. He has since been released and is charged with trespassing.
“Only one person arrested that day and that was me,” Baraka said. “No one else was arrested. No one else was in the car, no one else was in cuffs. No one else sat in the ICE detention facility or Homeland Security detention facility, but me, that’s it.”
Baraka said he was at the site daily with inspectors as part of an ongoing dispute with GEO, the private company operating the facility. “I’ve been there every single day in the morning…serving them with the fire inspector and the health inspector with UCC inspectors,” he said. “They won’t allow the fire inspectors entry into the property to do their inspections for certificate of occupancy.”
Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Homeland Security, said Baraka and others stormed the gate as a bus full of detainees was entering. “This put law enforcement at risk and this actually put the detainees as well at risk,” she said.
She added that the agency is reviewing video and more arrests could follow, including members of Congress. Democrats involved claim federal agents escalated the situation.
Baraka is scheduled to appear in court this week.
