New research has found that drivers in New York and Connecticut see speeding as the new normal.

Across the two AAA studies, 18% of drivers in both New York and Connecticut say they speed frequently, compared with 15% nationally.

The study included about 16,500 drivers ages 16 and older. While most agreed that posted speed limits are appropriate, many believed driving 10 mph over the limit was acceptable. Nearly half also believed that keeping up with traffic is safer than obeying the posted speed limit.

When it comes to where they see speeding most frequently, 74% of respondents reported often seeing speeding on highways. Only 45% said they saw it in residential areas.

AAA says drivers should choose their speed based on four main criteria: the posted speed limit, visibility, weather and road conditions, and the space around their vehicle.

If you are driving the speed limit while everyone around you is speeding, AAA says you should stay in the right lane and avoid driving in the passing lane unless absolutely necessary.
